If you’re reading this column, you probably already know better than most Mom’s that almost every English hagwon in Korea has essentially the same curriculum. It’s the same lessons that students are already learning in school, with very similar textbooks and a teacher lecturing to a large class with redundant vocabulary and grammar drills. Many children end up hating English, and never get comfortable speaking it. You know this, and yet you still shell out your hard earned money, and more importantly, your child’s precious time, because you don’t want your child to get behind the educational curve.
Instead of wasting your money and your child’s time on diminishing returns at these hagwons, we would propose a starkly different alternative: an after school English academy that balances the best of Swedish and Harvard educational principles. Swedish educational style implies small class sizes but large classrooms for movement and freedom, learning objectives tailored to each individual student, and a fun, happy environment where students are thrilled to come and sad to leave each day. Harvard educational principles means world-class teachers, constant student engagement and interaction, and a heavy focus on speaking, debating, and presentations.
The ideal after school academy is a rich learning environment where students are constantly talking, moving around, and having fun. The curriculum shouldn’t just be one grammar lesson after another, the English should be incorporated into a broader curriculum that incorporates other subjects like Science, History, Geography, Literature, and the Arts. There should also be time for fun activities like baking, music, games and drama. Students should leave each day energized and enthusiastic about learning English, not tired and frustrated.
When you choose an after-school program for your child, you are making an investment of your hard-earned money, but more importantly, you are investing your child’s precious time. Don’t spend that time and money duplicating the curriculum your child is learning at school. Seek out a school where your child will love learning to speak and use English naturally and confidently.
