The world is becoming one today, and the international language, English, is becoming more and more important. Sadly, learning English is not that easy. Some think, “Should I study abroad to be fluent in English?” Others think, “Isn’t it too hard to speak English?” Although I did not study abroad, I am quite confident in my English. I want to explain two methods I used to learn English, and how to be fluent in English.
Make small plans and achieve them
Just setting big, ambiguous goals such as “Speaking English Fluently” is not effective. Rather than that, you should make small but concrete plans. For instance, you can set a goal like memorizing 100 vocabulary words a week. By achieving little plans, you feel rewarded, and you can slowly become a better English speaker. The key to this is that you should take small steps and achieve them diligently.
English in your daily lives
The best way to learn English is to enjoy it. If you enjoy learning English, you will spend more time, eventually becoming fluent in English. One of my hobbies is listening to pop songs, which is a great way to enjoy music and learn English at the same time. I also enjoy watching foreign movies, but I have a different way of watching them. I watch them without subtitles. Without subtitles, I have to translate English into Korean, which is very helpful. In addition, you can learn about western culture or certain idioms that native speakers use.
Have you ever heard of the “10,000-hours” rule? This rule says that if you spend 10,000-hours in a certain field, you will become an expert in that field. I think it’s not just about quantity. It’s about the power of focused practice. If 10,000 hours are too much for you, aim for one hour right now! If you continue learning English diligently, you will be confident in your English.
