Learning English is different from learning Math!
Far too often Parents associate learning a language as an applied study rather than a natural process. Like breathing, eating, and walking, we all learn to listen and speak before we were old enough to use our minds.
Thus, when a child learns to read and write before they can speak, it’s just a matter of time (like math and science) before most of the words and expressions learned will be forgotten when they stop studying. However, if a student learns at an early age to communicate with the words they learned on a daily basis, they have a higher percentage of mastering the language without continuous study long after they reach adulthood.
Because all Korean students learned to read and write before they could communicate in English, our goals are to teach the students how to communicate with the words they already learned, and to finally use the English language to communicate their thoughts and expressions similar to how they mastered their first language.
Stress from Homework!
If you ask majority of Poly Magnet parents, what is the most stressful part about sending their child to an English school, they would say ““homework.””
However, this is derived from a misguided fact that ““homework is the key for improving English””and the only way to complete homework is to answer all the questions perfectly!”” It’s not!
Homework is just one of many tools or ““x-ray”” that we use to determine which skills each child needs help in the classroom. Similar to a medicine, overdose of homework can turn into a negative effect rather than a positive one. Homework is most effective and useful when a student take their time and comfortably (without worrying about being incorrect) tries to answer all the questions as best they can without over-thinking or over-stressing.
This way, a teacher can better evaluate where/why the student is having difficulties and improvements in certain areas. A student who spends endless hours trying to get all the questions correct isno benefit to the student nor the teachers trying to help the student. A parent and a student should never be stressed from doing homework as it’s just a small piece of the bigger puzzle to determine how we can support the student most effectively. Not to place burden or to judge them accordingly to their homework result. However, if a student doesn’t attempt to complete their homework, teachers can’t help them improve their language skills. Finishing the homework is more important than how many right and wrong!
